Dahara Dive Site – Wadi El Gemal, Marsa Alam, Red Sea, Egypt
Located within the spectacular waters of Wadi El Gemal National Park, Dahara is one of the largest and most diverse dive sites in the Marsa Alam region. Known for its varied underwater landscapes, healthy coral formations, and abundant marine life, this remarkable reef offers divers the opportunity to explore multiple environments during a single dive. Whether you are passionate about marine life encounters, underwater photography, or simply discovering the beauty of the Red Sea, Dahara delivers an unforgettable diving experience.
Dahara is typically divided into three distinct areas, each offering its own unique underwater attractions and marine habitats.
The dive begins beneath the moored boat in a shallow sandy area scattered with small coral blocks. These formations serve as natural shelters for numerous juvenile fish species and create a gentle introduction to the reef. As divers progress through this section, the landscape gradually leads to a beautiful coral plateau teeming with life.
One of Dahara’s most impressive features is a collection of coral pillars rising from depths of approximately 12 meters to just below the water’s surface. These towering structures are covered with colorful marine growth and attract a diverse range of Red Sea species.
The shallow sections of the pillars are particularly vibrant, supporting healthy populations of reef fish and invertebrates. Divers frequently encounter moray eels hidden among crevices, while schools of juvenile barracudas often patrol the area. Large groups of shimmering glassfish gather around the coral formations, creating spectacular underwater scenes that photographers will appreciate.
The edge of the plateau forms a ridge that drops dramatically to depths of around 30 meters, offering exciting opportunities to observe larger marine life and explore different reef environments.
Approximately 40 meters from the plateau, divers reach one of Dahara’s highlights: a vast hard coral garden. This stunning area showcases impressive coral formations interspersed with sandy patches and giant sea anemones. The coral structures provide refuge for countless reef inhabitants and demonstrate the incredible biodiversity that makes the Red Sea world-famous.
Among the coral garden’s residents are colorful anemonefish, large schools of doctorfish, and the iconic Napoleon wrasse. Lucky divers may also encounter one of the area’s most beloved visitors, the green sea turtle, gracefully swimming through the reef or feeding among the corals.
Dahara’s combination of sandy seabeds, coral pillars, reef walls, and extensive coral gardens creates a rich ecosystem capable of supporting a wide variety of marine species. Every dive can reveal something new, from small crustaceans and reef fish to larger pelagic visitors passing through the area.
The diversity of habitats also makes the site suitable for both marine life observation and underwater photography. Macro photographers can focus on smaller reef creatures hidden among the corals, while wide-angle enthusiasts can capture the dramatic pillars and expansive coral gardens.
As divers make their way back toward the boat, it is worth saving enough air and bottom time to thoroughly explore the upper sections of the coral pillars. These shallow areas are often home to various crustaceans, shrimps, and other small reef inhabitants, rewarding those who take the time to look closely among the coral formations.
Shams Diving Center Wadi El Gemal offers professionally guided diving excursions to Dahara and many of the region’s most beautiful reefs. With experienced dive guides, excellent safety standards, and extensive local knowledge, the team helps divers discover the extraordinary underwater treasures of Marsa Alam and Wadi El Gemal National Park.
Whether you are an experienced diver looking for diverse reef environments or a photography enthusiast searching for vibrant marine life, Dahara provides one of the most rewarding diving experiences in the southern Red Sea.
